What You Will Learn
This course equips you with both knowledge and practical skills through structured modules designed to prepare you for professional guiding. You will cover:

Guiding Principles
Learn the ethics, responsibilities, and professional standards of guiding, and how to create safe, informative, and meaningful experiences for guests.

Geology, Climate & Weather, and Astronomy
Understand how landscapes are formed, how climate and weather patterns influence biodiversity, and how astronomy can be used to interpret the night skies of the Southern Hemisphere.

Ecology and Biomes of Southern Africa
Gain knowledge of ecosystems, the flow of energy and nutrients, and the distinctive biomes found across South Africa.

Taxonomy and Plant Knowledge
Develop skills in identifying and classifying plants, understanding their ecological roles, and exploring their traditional and medicinal uses.

Fauna Studies
Study arthropods, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, learning how to identify species and explain their behaviours and importance in ecosystems.

Ethology (Animal Behaviour)
Learn to interpret animal tracks, signs, and behaviours, enabling you to provide insights into wildlife even when animals are not directly observed.

Conservation and Habitat Management
Understand methods of ecological management, including fire management, soil erosion prevention, and the control of alien invasive species.

Historic Human Habitation
Explore South Africa’s cultural and archaeological heritage, and how these histories have shaped today’s conservation areas and reserves.

FGASA Trails Guide (NQF Level 2)
This course provides the next step if you are ready to progress into leading guided walks. It combines structured theory with practical field time to build the judgement and confidence required to guide guests safely on foot.
It also supports further growth within the guiding and ecotourism sectors and sets you up to work towards the FGASA Trails Guide NQF Level 4 course.
What You Will Learn
This course develops the competencies needed for professional trail guiding. You will cover:

Trails Guiding Principles
Understand the purpose, scope, and ethics of trail guiding, and how to plan and deliver safe, informative walking experiences.

Risk Assessment and Legal Responsibilities
Learn to assess terrain, weather, and wildlife risk on foot, and understand the legal and ethical responsibilities that apply during guided walks.

Animal Behaviour and Dangerous Game Awareness
Build the ability to read behaviour, recognise signs of stress, and make conservative decisions when viewing potentially dangerous species on foot.

Tracks, Signs, and Situational Awareness
Develop observational skills to interpret tracks, feeding signs, scent marking, and alarm calls, maintaining constant awareness of wind, cover, and escape routes.

Navigation and Route Planning
Learn practical navigation with a map, a compass, and a GPS, and plan routes that balance guest experience with safety, time, and environmental conditions.

Group Management and Communication
Manage group spacing, positioning, and pace; conduct clear pre-walk briefings and debriefs; and use radio protocols to coordinate effectively.

Safety Procedures and Emergency Response
Understand field safety protocols, basic emergency responses, and incident reporting, including coordination with support teams where required.

Rifle Handling Context and Range Safety
Gain an understanding of firearm safety principles, range etiquette, and the role of rifle handling within trails operations (without providing technical instruction).
These modules are designed to support your assessments and to build the practical judgement needed to guide professionally on foot.
